HELP on wheel/tire combo
« on: March 24, 2010, 05:47:09 pm »
OK so its been a while, but its finally time to get my son's 83 back on the road.  Early in the build I bought a set of 16" rims with 255/70/16 tires on them.  Won't work with my 3" drop spindles as they rub on the lower control arm when you turn left or right.  Not really into wheel spacers or grinding the lower control arm, plus it looks like it would take a lot of grinding or a lot of back spacing.

So I've found a set of 17 x 8 Ultra Rims and wondering about tire size and also if I should put my rubbing issues to rest by even going with some 18's

Any thoughts?

I like the 18's, and know alot who prefer 20+. I am not a fan of 20's because I prefer a bit more sidewall on a truck. My thoughts are its a truck not a Vette, so the 20"s arent for me, but they look good. Mt truck had 18x8s in the front and 18x9s in the rear with the front being stock heighth on the tires and the rear tires are about one inch taller. I think its a 4/5 drop but I use a-arms in the front with lowering coils, and hangers and shackels in the rear. With the a-arms, I dont have the clearance issues related to spindles.

I had to cut my LCA for stock 17's off of an Impala SS. So just know that I'm the only person who has had that issue with 17's but it has happened.

here's where we're at - 16" with 5/16 backspacers and a little grinding on the passenger LCA which was aftermarket.  We'll see if it works after we put the front clip back on.....

Peace,
