alternator rebuild
« on: May 05, 2010, 08:12:48 pm »
I have a gm 10si alternator in my k5 and a couple days ago the plastic cooling fan behind the pully decided to explode causing the alternator to stop producing any current.  I tested the stator and rotor and they are not shorted.  So stupidly I went on to summit to but a rebuild kit for the alternator (local auto parts stores didn't have rebuild kits)

I didn't notice but that kit is for the GM 12si alternator.  heres the question, can't I just swap all of the internals into the 10si?  The only diffrence is the rectifier bridge, and the only diffrence is that its a little bigger to handle more amps but it looks like the mounting holes are in the same place.  Everything else (brushes, brush holders, diodes, voltage regulator, and that little canister thing) is exactly the same.
