Quadrajet question????

Got a question for you Quadrajet guys. I know on ones I used to run in the 80's, if you got the engine up around 2500-3000 rpm and gassed on it, the four barrel really opened up hard. You know the sound, a little hesitation, then wide open. The one on my '86 does not do that. Seems the four barrel is opening but is much more smooth. I kinda liked the old sound and wasn't sure if there is something I need to adjust to get this one to open like that, or is there a difference in some Quadrajets? Maybe different secondaries or something. Thanks guys!

There are a bunch of tricks, which I don't know, that can be done to really dial those in. My mechanic buddy used to dial in mine for my circle track car. The problem may be the 305 you have to work with. Good flowing heads versus peanut ports will vary the sound quite a bit. I am sure you will get more responses, just give it some time.

Try flipping your breather lid! Search the internet or get a book on adjusting quadrajets. I Bought a Haynes quadrajet book years ago and its a lifesaver. There's a spring tension on the secondary air flaps that can be adjusted to solve most problems. Seriously if you just want to hear it flip the breather lid. If you don't like the performance start at step 1 and adjust your carb.

Yeah there is a big difference between a stock air cleaner housing and an open element. The factory one was designed to be as quiet as possible.

There is an adjustment on the passenger side of the carb to adjust the rear flappers. It is a small flat head screw in line with the flapper pivot point with a small Allen screw to lock it in place. Loosen the Allen screw and the flat head screw adjusts spring tension on the flappers to set how fast they open. The hesitation you spoke of is usually because they open too fast dumping a bunch of air in the carb then it has to "catch up". That's when you take off. When I first got my truck, when you romped on it it would all but go dead and you would have to let off the gas and feather the throttle for it to get going again. Opening way too fast! I would think that one that opens smooth is working correctly. You to experiment with it a little bit to get it where you want it. I think you can only go about one round or less with the spring tension screw. Be careful not to get it too tight.
I have the factory air cleaner on mine with the baffle removed and the front air intake connected and it's pretty quite and mild. I have an open type air cleaner too and when I run it you can hear and feel the difference. The open type really does make a difference as for a little extra power and sound. I use my K&N element in both. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I will try to adjust the flaps. I do have an open air cleaner on it. I did notice that you can hear it open at 1200-1500 rpm. Now I would just like to get it where it will do it at a higher rpm. Thanks!
