MANUAL door popper?
« on: June 28, 2010, 01:48:15 pm »
I've seen these on classic cars before... door poppers without an electric solenoid. I don't really need a kit layed out for me but it'd be nice! I want to shave the handles and relocate a button on the bottom of the door.

I've got a 78 chevy c10 and this is gonna be the first mod on it.

I have done this before for a buddy on his 53 Chevy pickup, he already had the stuff to do it so I dont know where to get the man. kit. The down side to this is alot of people know to look at the bottom of the door for a man. release if they want to break in, alot of cars with electric releases will also have a man. release somewhere just in case the battery dies. Be different and hide the release somewhere else that no one would look like the fender well or gas tank door, all it is is a cable or rod you push or pull so if your good with fab. you can make your own setup

you can get really new school and make your popper with the fingerprint ID, eg; newer car starters or home door locks have the same kinda technology. extra security and 1 more cool little customation

Well id like to only have one on the drivers side, and leave the lock inplace...just maybe recessed a little, and also blacked out. I wanna be able to lock the drivers side. I guess I can hide a little latch in the wheel well, that's not a bad idea.

Thing is he said without electric, he wants it to be manual not electric so the finger print would not be the one since it is electric. The only way to do manual is by rod or wire. If your battery dies with electric release you are now locked out. You should be able to find a manual kit on the internet somewhere, or find a shop that deals with old custom hot rods and they should be able to help you find what you need.

Heres an idea run a cable ( like a brake cable from a bike with the outter sleave on it ) from the latch thru the door into the jam right under the hinge, route the cable to the fender with just a small loop on the end. When you pull the cable it should release the latch. If you rig a spring on the door jam near the stricker bolt so it is compressed when door is closed once the latch is released the spring will pop the door open a little bit. With a simple setup like this there is not much that could fail and lock you out. Might take a little fab. work but will be a one of a kind setup ( unless I do it to mine---just joking ) Hope it works out for you, this is along the lines of what my buddys 53 chevy has.

That sounds good, problem solved! Though a pull would be easier I kind of wanted something I could push in.

a push rod would be a little harder, I will give it some thought and let you know if I can come up with something

You can rig the manual locks up to actuate the lever also.

remove the door lock rod from the lock cylinder rig up an attachment from it to the button latch so when you turn the lock it pulls the latch mechanism down.  Seen it a few times.
