tri-y headers..Doug Thorley

Doug Thorley, Anyone out there running these. I know that they make good low end torgue from experience so I'm not looking for an alternative. They are going into '87 silverado 4x4 w/ 383stroker, 700r4 and np208(unfortunately). They say that they are for the specific truck but anyone have any clearance  problems either from tranny, steering, fenders, x-fer case or ground clearance issues?

I have a set and I love them. No clearance issues at all.

I run them without any issues, but my truck is a 2WD.

One reason I like them is the coating has never gone bad. Another is the flanges are super thick, smooth, and straight. Never had an exhaust leak.

Beastie, are your headers ceramic coated or silver ceramic and can you explain the difference?  Can you access all the spark easily?

I dont remember what coating, but they are chrome looking. The plugs are easy enough to access, as good as your going to get, really. Just a plug socket, extension, and maybe a wobbler. The only thing I didnt like was the PS side collector dumps at an angle, rather than straight back. I guess the reason is because of 4wd, but if I had known, I would have ordered the 2wd because there wouldnt have been a clearance issue on my truck. It actually would have been perfect. The only reason I complain about it is because I had built my own exhaust for it and getting it to curve back up was a problem. But an exhaust shop wont have a problem.

Well thats settled. plenty of reviews for me. Beastie, i paln doing my exhaust myself as well so would you recommend getting the 2wd version. with sas i don't how it would get in the way that much. I take it ceramic coated is highly recommended.

I would call Doug Thorley to see what the differences between 2 and 4 wheel are. IF the PS collector dumped in the same spot and angle as the DS, I would have done it. It would have been a perfect shot to go past the transfer case, over the crossmember. But I got it to work so im fine with it.

Chris, I'd like to know if they will fit on my 78 Silverado.  It's got 2-1/2" drop spindles in front.  My Hookers make some spark plugs next to impossible to get to.  Also, do you know the difference between ceramic and silver ceramic coated headers? - Thanks, Mark

If they fit my '85 perfectly, I can't imagine why they wouldn't fit your '78.  I am running Thorley 300Y headers and can get to every spark plug with a socket, though it is tight in some spots so I like to wrap my socket and extension in painter's tape to prevent scratches.  My understanding is that the chrome finish is for appearance and corrosion protection only, while the ceramic silver adds the benefit of heat reduction (though it doesn't look as nice as the chrome finish).  My headers are ceramic coated and unless my memory is failing me, my underhood temps seem to have gone down when compared to stock manifolds.  These are quality headers, but they come with cheap gaskets.  I suggest using quality copper gaskets at both ends of the header.
