---pull out your speakers and look at the colors for each speaker, then test for a constant power (powered with the key off-hook this to memory wire. then find one for your power wire(powered with the key on)-hook this to power wire, if you don't want to pull your speakers gm generally uses a solid color wire and a matching striped wire in the same color for each individual speaker. I believe the solid color wire is always connected to the pos. side of the speaker, just remember to ground the ground wire(black) and hook up the antenna. ---another, better option would be to get the harness plug at a salvage yard or online I believe they did not change from 78-90. should be very easy to find and re-install, then get an adapter kit to hook up an aftermrket unit if that's what you are going to use, otherwise just plug it in. don;t let the number of wires to intimidate you it is very easy to figure out where everything goes
-----if my memory serves me white-white black and gray-gray black are front and purple-purple black and green and green black are rear speakers, blue is for a powered antenna, orange and yellow are for power and memory can't remember which is which.
----btw if you connect your memory, power and ground you can find your speaker one by one by using the fade and balance and trying them one by one in order to get them correct.
---if someone sees an error in this info please correct it and help out with the right and left colors if you can.

my truck originially had just an am radio with 1 speaker. I just hooked up the ground, found a constant power for the memory and an ignition-switched wire to turn it on. then wired to an amp and my speaker wires all run from the amp. If you can find the wires behind the radio or where it will be you can find them in the fuse box with a test light.
