It's the interior cab light.

Not sure, I'll have to take a look.  I think it's probably connected to the dimmer switch though.

I believe it goes to the fuse box. Check in the tech section of this site for the wiring diagram and trace it.

I looked at the diagrams but for me they are hard to figure out!
I don't see anywhere uder the dash or on the fusebox that where it
came from? That wire got caught up in my grinder months ago, all
that is there is the white/orange wire bare at the drivers kick panel
then going into thhe piller behind drivers side of seat.
Any pic of where it goes would ne great

This is on my 79. It is the wire with the blue quick connector on it. The white wire splits off and heads up to the back of the instrument panel, on my truck anyways....

Hey, I just checked my '86 after seeing your thread. Since the inside of my truck is gutted, it was fairly easy to do. The orange wire follows under the carpet, up behind the fuse box, out the top, then the orange wire goes to a battery terminal on the top left of the block. The white wire follows further up into somewhere else.

Thanks for the info so far , I will try to trace it now and figure it out.
That wire got caught up in my grinder months ago and got tore pretty good!

I will see if the other end is running thru the engine compartment side

I think you're gonna find the orange wire goes from the courtesy light socket where it tees off to the printed instrument panel circuit connector, the light switch, and to the fuse box where it picks up a b+ signal to operate the light.
The white wire goes from the courtesy light socket to the light switch.
