wanna guess what this is in th350 pan?
« on: September 08, 2010, 07:25:13 pm »
Well awhile back we had some trouble with dad's th350 long tail and ended up swapping it for a short tail, well I had the pan off and noticed this crap...

nevermind the clip I put it in there so I wouldn't lose it.

now that was the same way a year ago when we installed the b&m shift kit in it but it had alot of black pieces like old gaskets in it as well as the mud looking crap. Looks like mud to me any ideas? I know it aint good, but it was not working right anyways, it's not gonna be used except for parts or rebuild later.

Does it stick to a magnet?

don't know but I did see some silver looking pieces so there's a good chance it has metal in it.

almost every th350 I ever tore apart never had one. I've had at least 3 or 4 apart and never seen one but the 700r4 I had, it had one.

Its all the important parts of your tranny.  they migrate down to the pan so you can keep an eye on them easier.   ;)

I don't doubt it a bit, seems like the black crap before(year ago) was probably clutch material or something and this is more of it? What gets me is how it looks like mud, like somebody just threw some dirt in it, but I guess clutch firction would look like that?

Every trans I change the fluid in had a magnet in it. And they all were covered in flakes like that my moms e150s was slipping bad changes the fluid and added Lucas transmission fluid and she's still running 5 years later

Swims, it looks like to me that maybe water got into your pan and got under the paint and caused your pan  to rust.  I see this a lot in my work.  I can be wrong since I am looking at a pic, but i have seen this a thousand times.  Have you tried to scrape it and see if is just on the pan or the pan itself is coming apart..... The stuff is loose in the pan, not attached to it at all and the pan isn't rusted anywheres.

I guess I should have mentioned it before.

The other thing I would mention then is, I service an aqueous cabinet washer for a mercedes dealer in stockton, when I clean it out they always have gooie material sticking to the bottom and sides of the washer.  I inquired about it and they said they use a special sealant on all metal parts to help seal everything on a mercedes.  So it might be some sealant or additive that someone has added.  If I had a sample I could test it at work and tell you for sure, but in my opion you shouldn't worry too much, I don't think it is coming apart or anything.  Hope this helps....tom

actually it is coming apart, it's laying beside my building because it wasn't working right and got switched out. I just wondered if anyone knew for sure what it was, I figured clutches.
