found the trans leak on my 88 k1500(th350)
« on: September 14, 2010, 07:28:35 pm »
I don't think I shared or mentioned it much but I got an 88 k1500 that I had a th350 built to replace the 700r4, it's got a spacer and tailshaft that mkes it the same length as a 700 so it all bolts up in place. I had the thing rebuilt guy found the trans, rebuilt it and put the kit in for me, knew the guy forever, lived across from his shop for years, helped him out, hang out alot and got screwed.

The freakin case has a piece gone from the back side of the 1-2 accumulator cover. It's been leaking there since I put it in, and I could never figure it out, I ended up rtv'ing it. it kept leaking so I had a 1-2 seal from a b&m shift kit I figured I'd change it. HA, didn't need to since I found out it's broke, no wonder it leaks if the case is broke. a 3/4 tall and 1/4 wide piece is gone and 3/4 inch above it is cracked.

Needless to say I aint going to him again I'll learn to do it myself. I have to wait until I get some cash to rebuild dad's old one I guess, or find me another one. I glued it with some seal all glue, maybe it'll work if not might try jbweld or something. I gotta keep driving it, in order to get money to fix it lol, I'll just have to keep check on the fluid.

man sorry to hear about that its really tough with you knowing the guy and all and it being your daily and every thing is even worse. just get a good service manual and a good clean work station and work slow and takes pics. i rebuilt my 400 with the help of my buddys dad who used to do them for a living. a bit intimidating but not impossible

I hear ya man and appreciate it. I plan to keep it as is until it gets worse or I get more down time or have to lol. Then I'll swap it all over.

sure thing. as long as your fluid is topped off you should be able to limp it along for a while

well it runs fine, it's been that way for over a year now since it's been in the truck, never could figure out the leak, I even had the whole area rtv'd over beofre but thought it was the o-ring behind it bad, until I found the chunk gone. We drove the guts out of it too, hauling 1/2 ton and 1 tons loads alot, hauling down the highway at like 75-85 or so on our way to and from work. it doesn't seem to be any worse and I haven't had to add fluid in months, but I know it leaks since I've seen spots under it.
