interchangeable? 73 Pontiac 400 parts fit 350? etc
« on: September 22, 2010, 08:42:08 pm »
Hi, my 78 GMC 350 rebuild is down the road, just rebuilt a 73 Pontiac 400. A friend is giving me a clean 350 block, intake and not much else. Are there any parts of this 400 that will fit the 350, and or parts from a 307 fit the 350 block. I would like to take this block and make an engine out of it. It would serve me well for either the 78 GMC Sierra or a 66 Buick leSabre more than the 400.
Thanks in advance
Patrick

Nothing Pontiac will fit a Chevy...Put the 400 in the truck! Pontiacs make TONS of torque.

You'd have to change the mounts and trans as the bellhousings are different. The mounts can be fabbed up pretty easy or I think Ken Keefer (Pontiac Dud - yes, that was intentional, I like him about as much as I do Bruce Fulper...) offers mounts or can make them.

I may be wrong as I am not a Poncho expert. But I believe all the Pontiac motors 307, 350, 400, 455 share the same bolt patterns for bell, heads, intake, etc. I think some of the internal parts interchange as well. Other might require some machine work but will basically fit.

I know in a late 70's, think it was a 78 GP with a blown 301, I slid a 400 in place.  I know it was a little taller and wider but slid right down on the motor mounts and everything bolted right back on, surprisingly easy swap.  The 400 came out of a 1976 GP which was huge by comparison.  The dual exhaust, everything but the tailpipes went back on it.  That was my only Pontiac experience.
