Anyone ever buy one of those DIY precut tint kits from ebay?
« on: October 21, 2010, 08:58:36 am »
I'd like to tint my truck but don't want to pay the money at a shop. I figure in this truck would probably be an easier first job to do with tint.

These kits have everything cut - vent windows, slider back windows etc.

Let me know if you did... thanks.

I've never used a precut kit, but I've had good luck using the rolls and trimming it myself. The roll is probably cheaper and leaves you extra in case you screw up.

Where you buy the rolls of tint you can usually buy it. They make a special one for it that's about 6" long.

I like the blue squeegees myself, and I can tell you that the two tint shops here pre cut tint before they apply it...Ive done tint off the roll and had varied results...Id say if its between paying 100+ for someone to do your truck or ordering a pre cut tint for 30-40 bucks then I'd use it.....I cant though I have one piece windows...hahaha

I'm sure a local shop here would charge 200 bones to do it.

I recently did my own with tint i got from local parts store.  I wound up buying an extra roll by the time i was done thanks to a couple problems but overall i saved over  a $100 doing it myself.  I got all the stuff including the spray solution at Orielly's.  The only problem with precut is, you can't afford any mistakes.  I will admit, it would have been easier to have the pieces precut.  good luck.

I used the rolls and mine was super easy to do.  Of course all the windows were out of the truck and I tinted them on the kitchen table... ;)

If you have lots and lots and lots and lots of patience, go for it.  I've done it on cars with rolls before and they suck, especially the back window.  If I knew there were precut kits, I'd have tried it just to see what its like.  Really the trimming is the hard part the rest is easy, so if they are cut to the right size out of the box it sounds like it would be super simple to do.

I boought a set of precut tint for my fbodys I put the tint on one window and when I did the wind blew and screwed it up! I'm going to try again with the doors off inside since I have a garage now. I did the back glass in my truck but I used 5% tint from a roll from autozone and it worked well but it was off the truck.

I don't understand why precut would help.  Granted I've only tinted one vehicle myself, but cutting the roll tint was easy.  The hard part is getting it all to lay flat and getting the air bubbles out.

I like using the rolls because I can cut the piece to approximate size & shape, then I start in the middle and work the bubbles out towards the outside, and then just trim the edges with a razor blade.

I found it is easier to tint the whole glass with just some film and removing the glass from the door.
If you get them tinted local and they screw up the film, the cost doesn't change as it does with a pre-cut.

There are certain jobs on a truck that justify the expense of hiring a professional to do. Window tinting falls at the top of that list. I have done it before, and I have little doubt that I can do it again. I can also say with great confidence that since I have proven that I "can" do it, I know I will not do it again.

I completely agree. Been there, done that. Now that I have proven to myself that I can do it, the pro's will get the rest of my tinting jobs in the future. Plenty of other productive things I can be doing instead of piddling around with something that someone else can make look so easy.
There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

I agree! It wasn't too bad doing the back glass for my truck but the guy that did the side windows in my yukon did it in half the time and only charged me $65
