engine swap questions
« on: November 04, 2010, 11:19:13 am »
I have an 80 K5 all stock, I have lucked into a 85 silverado 2wd with a better running engine than the K5 and am wanting to swap engines.  The silv has a shot transmission, 5 years of back registration overdue, and a hack of steering column swap job on it which combined would cost more than the truck is worth to fix up.  Both are 350, the K5 is manual the silv is automatic.  The only thing that comes to my mind as a difference in enignes is the electric choke in the 85 and the fly wheels, other than that it should be a simple swap right?  looking for advice for installing an electric choke and to see if im off the mark in my guesses here.  Not a mechanic, but no stranger to tools either.   Thanks.......

They should both be 2-piece rear main motors, so your flywheel & clutch should bolt right on. Make sure to install a new pilot bushing in the new crank.

For the electric choke, you may need to run a new 12V switched power supply to it.

Also the 85 might have an ESC dizzy in it, but you could re-use your original one. You could also re-use your old carb if it's in better shape.
