79 k10 converting from auto to 4 spd
« on: November 16, 2010, 12:53:43 pm »
Hi guys and gals lol! Im new to the forums. I got a 79 chevy k10 4x4 shortbed that has a 350 motor with a th350 trans and 203 transfer. Im wanting to convert it to a 4 spd. I got a 78 chevy k20 long bed out back with a 454 big block and 4 spd its 4x4 with the 205 transfer i think. Will the bellhousing work off that motor on my 350? What flywheel, bellhousing, clutch do i need? The 4 spd has a new hayes clutch that id like to use. The 4 spd is a bull dog trans any info helps alot i need to get this done b4 it snows

Sb (350) and bb (454) have the same bolt pattern just you will need a longer rear drive shaft

Personally, I'd swap the big block, and the 3/4 ton axles in with it. Not sure what you mean by Bull Dog tranny? It should be an SM465, Low 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Your best bet is swap in the trans, and tranfer case, then have a rear shaft made, or possibly shorten the one from the K20.

well im kinda scared to put the big block in it lol on the dyno it made 725 horsepower at 4200 rpms and 795 ft lbs of torque. Its a 468 roller motor with a set of 396 375 horse heads with alot of work 10000 rpm erson valvesprings with the biggest lift cam they make for a 454. 2.18 1.88 valves longtube headers and a few other goodies. but we snapped the leaf springs and went through 3 4 speed trannys in a week. The only way it will start on 93 pump gas is if you squirt the carb full of starting fluid. So we just run it on turbo blue race fuel. And that gets expensive for an everyday driver. So id like to keep the small block lol  ;D now on the flywheel i need the 168 tooth but will i be able to run a 12 or 13 inch clutch on it? I will get pics up of the short bed might end up selling it as bad as id hate too  :(

I think the hardest part of the swap will be setting up your auto trans cab for the clutch pedals.  you'll have to sway the pedal brackets from the manual trans cab to the auto trans cab, its doable, just inconvenient.
