86 GMC K10
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:07:54 pm »
Im very excited about this one. This makes no 5 of the extended cabs I have, but this is the only one I have ever known to have a diesel. The body has one ding in it the size of a dime, and the clear coat is peeling in some areas. Interior is excellent. My plans are to just get it going, and probably reclear it.
That leads me to my question. Im not new to diesels, just new to diesels in automotive applications. It has a suspected headgasket issue, so as soon as I can get a spot cleaned in the shop, I will be attacking that. What else should I look for? I have a friend that has worked on Detroit Diesels for 17 years ( I know its not a Detroit tho) and has some experience with these, and knows how to turn the fuel up to gain a little more power. Im not going for a house puller, just get the most efficiency out of it. I just wanna drive it. My mind is wanting to change the exhaust, but as a gas guy who puts Flowmasters on everything, Im not sure a diesel will sound as good. Turbo is later. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Sorry the pics arent great, I will get better pics later. Thanks guys

That is 1 rare truck you have found.
I assume it has a 6.2 in it which is a Detroit Diesel so I'm sure your friend can help you out.

Technically its not a true Detroit diesel. I worked for Stewart and Stevenson which is a large Detroit dealer and went to many tech schools in Detroit. They are very quick to tell you that the 6.2 is not made by Detroit Diesel. The smallest automotive diesel they clame for these year models is the 8.3 which was in the C60 and larger trucks. The guy thats gonna helped me pointed out that if you look closely at the design, it resembles a Pontiac engine.

Thats good news, maybe I can pass off my spare 6.2 as a Super Duty 455 and get huge $$ for it. Just kidding, I love that truck. I've yet to see a real extended cab in person. The few I have seen were homemade jobs.

Thanks fitz and 1980c10, I am hoping to get it going soon. We will prob use it to go behind our motorhome later on down the road. So far it is the cleanest one I have seen in person. I think Zeigs is cleanest over all. I know my gas engines, but when it comes to the diesels, I know Cat, Detroit, and some John Deere. Ive been looking for info fo what else I should do to help the engine when I go in and replace the headgaskets. Ive heard talk about egr removal, but how to do it, and how it helps I cant find. At 115000 miles should I replace the injectors, or just have them tested? I know new glow plugs are gonna be installed, but what else would be a good idea to replace/modify while I am in there, is the info I cant seem to find.

EGR has to be removed by buying a Military intake or moding it out of your current intake.  I think someone here modded theirs out.
I am neutering my K5 4x4 this week to put the 6.2L in.

I can't find anything on that option code in any of the 86 brochures.  Didn't GMC sponsor the olympics that year?  Maybe that had something to do with it.
