Gas tank relocation
« on: December 01, 2010, 12:38:55 pm »
Hey gang, I have to come an issue with my gas tanks for my 82 K30. I want to go back to duel tanks but i dont want to use the saddle bag style. I have one tank in the back that is 25 gallons so thats not a problem. The other tank, i am not sure where to put, what tank to use or how to attach it. Anybody do this to their truck?

Thanks

Chris

I might have been looking in the wrong place when i searched... I will keep looking to find something or just check out and see how my 98 3500 Hd is bolted in and follow how that is done.

Thanks

Thats cool, i already have that part done! I want to add a second tank that looks like the saddle bag tank but just on the inside of the frame rails. I just might have to come up with it myself.

Why do you want to move it to the inside of the rails?
I don't know of anyone that makes takes so it will have to be custom.

If you run the tank inside the frame be sure to run a driveshaft loop. A bad ujoint could ruin your day real quick.

I just figured i would still like duel tanks, but i dont like them where they are. Just doesent seem as safe. Many other truck companies have done duel tanks on trucks with both tanks inside the frame. I figured it would be custom, just figured i would ask if anybody has done it. It does look like a tight fit, my 82 is lifted so the driveshaft isn't exactly as close as if it was stock.  I would think it would be common. I guess when GM did the recall back in the day they just switched to 1 tank or just payed us to have your truck crushed. As for the drive shaft loop, i can imagine a broken u joint would not be good!

A couple of 16 gal. beer kegs mounted up behind the headache rack would be pretty sweet. 8)

GM never did a "recall", the gave out vouchers of $1500 that you could only use toward the purchase of a newer vehicle.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with side mounted tanks.

X2
I've been around these trucks all my life, seen a few t-boned hard, never saw one explode.

An auxillary tank, or upgrading to a larger suburban tank my be best option.

Well i guess I havent been around long enough to remember, i just hear things people tell me! So i guess having the duel tank setup the way I in-vision it wont exactly work. I am gonna see what i can do once the truck comes back from the motor swap.

Thanks

You can do whatever your mind is set to do. The dual tanks on the outside aren't that hazardous, so I wouldn't avoid it based on that. However, if dual tanks inside the frame is what you want, go for it. Thinking outside the norm has given us all many great inventions.

This is going under a dump bed correct? The side tanks might be unsightly without anything concealing them. Maybe you can frame mount fuel cells behind the cab, under the bed, similar to the tool boxes that you see under some flatbeds.
