How much would it be worth to part out?
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:08:49 pm »
I am thinking of parting out my truck or selling it. Problem is, it is in Cali and has 0 smog equipment. This would obviously hurt the sale a lot. I didn't pay much for the truck, it is just the fact that I kinda want something more reliable and 4x4, and as what was said, it is much easier to just buy a 4x4 K10 or so. So how much would you say sell/part out worth? Truck is an '85, minimal rust, cab looks fine. Rust on tailgate is probably the worst of it and the lower corners of the doors are kinda rusty. Power windows not working, roll down about an inch a minute. AC is there however needs charged. It has a mild built 350 with probably less than 10k on it, a TH-400 with a shift kit as well to match. Frame isn't rusty, steering and suspension function fine. Aluminum gull-wing truck box with keys. New tires. Thanks.

Tough to tell without seeing your truck but the best I ever did parting out a truck was buying a 81K10 shortbed that was all done over. The owner needed cash and sold it for what he had into the motor($3500, he had all of the receipts).
I put the motor in my Camaro and got $7500 for the truck selling it piece by piece. It adds up quick.
Solid 6' bed $800
Mint GM doors $400
Mint cab $1000
Turbo 350/205 $500
12 bolt/10 bolt with 3.73's $500pr
Nose with GM fendersHood and aftermatrket fender wells $500
4" list kit $150
35" tires with aluminum rims$500
GM dash pad(new)$200
redone seat $200
4x4 shortbed frame (sandblasted/painted)$400
Rad w/electric fans $200
Driveshafts (were made new for a 205/4"lift) $200Pr.
Headers with new exhaust/flowmasters$250
The list goes on, there was lots more nickle and dime stuff.
I've parted out a ton of these trucks over the years and this was the only 1 where I sold 100% of it. There was literally nothing left to haul to the junk yard.
I've stated on this form before that for people needing parts, sometimes the cheapest way to get them is to buy someone Else's pride and joy. You have to spend some $$ up front, but then keep what you need and sell off the rest.

Wow, a lot more than I was expecting. How much work was involved and time to part out though? Like I said, I'd be happy just making my money back. I know the engine and trans are very good since I drove the truck from MI to Cali without problems recently. I know there are a ton of useable parts as well as great extra parts I have such as a dash and rear bumper. I might try to post an ad on here. I think I need to pay a subscription though.

Given that you plan to purchase another; you should keep it until then, so you can use whatever parts you might , if your budget allows, then part it out. You could also try to sell it without the smog equipment at the price you need to see how it goes. I have my parts truck left overs for sale as whole or parts.

I would do that, or use the 350 for a current project however I don't have the space to keep more parts than I have. I could probably get away with parting it out as parts probably wouldn't be here too long or I could probably part it out someplace else. Do you guys think I could sell it outright for $1500 then?

How much work was involved and time to part out though?

It was a real clean truck that had been all apart before so it came apart real easy(no rusty hardware to deal with like most trucks here in Mass). It took a good 2 days to tear it down.
It took almost 1 year to sell off all of the parts. Some parts went quick, other stuff took awhile put it all sold eventually.
I would say try getting $1500 for yours on craigslist if time/storage space is a problem

Well I posted it for $1500 locally and only got one guy looking at it. The problem now is that I just learned, I can't get a title for it. The registration lady said that since the DMV was trying to transfer the title, it is in my name, but since it won't pass smog, I can't get it.... or something along those lines. Bottom line is, I'm kinda screwed. I tried asking the guy if he would take a bill of sale but since he is getting a loan they want an actual title.
What would be my options here now? I don't know if I could part it out or do a major project on it. I was thinking of getting a 73-75 cab with a clean title and swapping it on instead. I don't know if 72-older stuff will transfer. But would I need a frame too or just cab?
Otherwise, I could get a pre-76 Chevy truck and swap the drivetrain in, scrapping or parting the truck... but I don't have the time or the money to do that.

You can just get a smog exempt cab and throw it on there. 73-75 gas or 73-87 diesel.

A few other issues you will have if you decide to part out the truck are looky-lou's and low-ballers. My cuz and I were given a 85 C20 2WD w/454 TH400 and 4.10 posi 14 bolt rear end and everybody and there mother wants stuff off the truck but nobody wants to pay what it's worth.
