I am the proud owner of a sharp 1987 Chevy 4x4. I drove it from Illinois to Fort Richardson, Alaska, which is where I am stationed. It is my daily driver, but I would like to start having a little offroad fun with it. It is winter for around six months here. We get lots of snow and ice. I am having problems keeping traction to both wheels. I am lost as to how to correct this problem. I am afraid if I get full lockers when I am turning corners on slick roads the wheels will "hop" and could possibly drift me across/off the road. Some people have mentioned limited slips to me, but no one seems to know anything about them. I know there are several kinds, but if this is the answer, what kind? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and specifics will definitely help me.
