no heat!
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:23:35 am »
hey everyone. the cold weather here caught me off gaurd. went to take the truck to work early in the morning and had hardly any heat. it blows out fine, just warm air. i've read some forums to see what to check. the 2 hoses running into heater box are hot and the top hose on rad is cool and the bottom one is cool. is there no flow for these hoses or is rad clogged? was planning on getting new rad and hoses after holidays. any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm having similar problems with mine however the hoses going into and out of the heater core are cold and the radiator hoses are hot.  I would try changing your thermostat...only a $5 part.

If heater hoses are hot, that means you are getting coolant flow.  Rad hoses should be warm after truck has "warmed up".  I would look at your temperture control cable.  Pull your glovebox down or un-screw it.  Move the temp control and you should see the cable move on the heater box.  Sometimes, the clamp that holds the cable breaks off the box.  You will see the cable move, but the inner cable that's attached to the door does not.  You should see the handle that the cable is attached to. Try moving it and see if your heat works.

hey everyone. changed out the t stat and it was bad. it was a 160 when it should of been 195. let it run for awhile and now has nice heat. is it possible for this to affect my gas mileage? thanks for the help.

Yes it can because it doesn't reach a good operating temp for normal driving. You can get a little gas mileage back by advancing the timing a little but I'd just stick with the 195 thermostat.

thanks texas, i read it somewhere but wasn't sure. i've been going through a tank of gas just back and forth to work, about 180mi. a week. plus i think timing might be out a little. thanks again
