ball joint help please
« on: December 18, 2010, 06:49:09 am »
74 chevy 4x4 k20 dana 44 front axle, Just did all the tie rods and drag link in my truck along with new 2" lift leaf springs all the way around and shocks.  Thought I was all done and took it over to get it aligned and it could not be aligned because they said the ball joints are bad on driver side.  Went and bought the parts to do both sides, but I have never done ball joints before.  I have read alot of the posts on here about doing them just wanted some advice.  I keep hearing how bad they are to do and am wondering if it would be easier to just take it in or is this something I can do( pretty mechanical just never done these before).  Can someone run me through doing the upper and lower on the k20 and is it easier to buy the tool to get them out or take the knuckle in to be pressed in and out?  Thanks guys any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can rent the tool for autozone. On autozones web site you can look at the chilton manuel, that with show you how to do it and give you all the torque specs.I done my joints and it is not hard to do.You will need a speicial socket for the hub bearing and the ball joint sleeve.

OK so can someone clear this up for me please.  When replacing the ball joints upper and lower I need a spanner wrench in addition to the press I bought.  This spanner wrench is for taking out the adjusting sleeves?  So I bought all 4 ball joints did I need to buy sleeves also or are they on the new ball joints?  Was thinking this job would not be to bad so I bought the tools for it, but now its starting to sound more confusing.  Can anyone give me some good info on this?  Thank you.

I've changed balljoints on several vehicles, and they were all similar.  Reading through the following post I realize I have no idea how to do it on a 4x4 chevy!  Check this out if you haven't already read it:

yea I read that already, guy has a pretty good site for info.  Thank you though.  I decided to just bite the bullet and took it to a local shop to get it done $400 to do all 4 ball joints so it will be done today and I can go get it aligned and start driving it.
