True Dual Exhaust for an 87

Hey dudes!

I've got a two wheel drive '87 Chevy R10 (1/2 ton pickup, only year they used the "R" designation for pickups as far as I know) and I want to put on a manifold back dual system.

I've always liked the sound of glass packs on these trucks, call me crazy, but I've never put one on myself. I found in a catalog with three letters, but it's not listed for an '87. It's part number 36-5577 and it's on page 125 of their catalog. It says it's for a 73-77. Would there be any reason why an '87 would require a different exhaust from the manifolds back?

I'm thinking either there is a difference, or they list it that way to cover their backsides when it comes to emissions compliance, but I'm not sure.

the reason the system is listed for only up to 77 is because, 78 and newer cars and light trucks are required by the EPA to have a catalytic converter in place for emissions purposes. it is also illegal to tamper with these devices.

we put dual glass packs on our 87 454 dually. just pipes strait off of the headers to glass packs. sweet sound ;D ;D
what are emission laws? ::)

For cars and light duty trucks it was 75 and newer...

Let's say I'm going to use this off-road only, for drag racing, making the discussion legal for anyone afraid to recommend anything.

Is there any reason my '87 would be different than a '77? Different cross member, gas tank, or drive shaft placement? Anything like that?

Also, I edited my original post to comply with the powers that be. Sorry, I didn't know they were a competitor. Also, I didn't see any forum rules post about that. I went looking and didn't find anything about posting competitors names. I like this forum, and the reason this is only my 2nd post is because I've been able to find answers to my questions through searching old posts. Keep it going! I love this site.

Hello fellow Iowegian! I'm located in Waterloo just an hour or so from you. So you're familiar with Iowa's emissions laws I'm sure.

For everyone else, there is no testing or inspections of any kind.

The manifolds are different between the 2 years, they exit about the same way but I can't say the older exhaust would work with the 87 manifolds.  Try checking to see if they share the same y-pipe that should give you a good indication...

If yours has an O2 sensor or a cat on it then you may want to not tamper with that if your state is strict.  Here in good ole arkansas they are very lax with the enforcement of the laws.  If you lived here I would say "laws?? You mean guidelines?" then point you to a muffler shop that does great work.

O2 sensor can be added with a weld in bung.....

Ill say where Im at in Florida they are mega relaxed, and in Florida we are in general relaxed until you get into the larger cities.  Emissions smhisshions.

Indeed the O2 can be added, and I'm guessing that's the only reason that the kit's not listed for the 87 since it wouldn't be a direct bolt on. Cherry Bomb glasspacks are only about $25 a piece, and if you can find somebody to bend and weld the pipe for you it would be a much better exhaust system than the clamping pieces together setup that's in that kit. Also Chris does sell an exhaust system for 2wd trucks on this site, but it's set up for long tube headers, which by the way, would be a great upgrade. I run long tube headers, 2.5" duals with 24" glasspacks and I think it sounds great.

I'll have to check again tonight but I believe the O2 sensor is in the base of the manifold, and not involved with the down pipes in any way.

I definitely want to keep the O2 sensor there for closed loop control of air/fuel ratio!
