Axle Spline?
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:48:08 pm »
Hey guys , I was wondering if the 6 lug axle from a 4wd and the 5 lug axle from a 2wd have the same spline , I have a posi unit in a parts 4 wheel drive that I was hoping to put in my 2 wheel drive truck , I want to stay away from carrying 2 spare tires , I was hoping I could swap the axles and keep the 5 lug all round

Thanks , Brennan.

As long as it’s the same type of axle it should be a swap. You should be able to also swap the brake back plate and all

Your spline count should be 28 on both axles if their 10 bolt differintials. 30 spline on the 12 bolt Diffs. The difference is going to be in the length. 2wd 10 bolt 5lug 28 spline = 31 3/8"  4wd 10 bolt 6 lug 28 spline = 31 5/16"

2wd 12 bolt 5 lug 30 spline = 31 5/16"  4wd 12 bolt 6 lug 30 spline = 31 9/32"

The 4WD 10 Bolt had 2 sets of splines counts AFAIK.
28 for certain years and 30 for certain years (at least on the K5).
Up to 87 for front 10 bolts was 28 spline, and 88-91 was 30

The rear was always 30 spline
