Front driveshaft clunking noise
« on: December 27, 2010, 04:02:32 pm »
Hi guys,

I just signed up.  Got an 87 3/4 ton longbed with a 6" lift.  I bought the truck back in March of '09.  When I engage the 4 wheel drive, I get a loud clunking noise as soon as I start to drive.  I think the noise is coming from the CV joint at the transfer case.  When I'm underneath the truck and grasp the driveshaft, it wiggles a little side to side, not front to back.  Happens anytime I lock the front hubs...even when 4wd is not engaged.  Do I need a different CV joint that could make up for the steeper angle created by the lift? It actually seems like the driveshaft might be too long... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....thanks

Sometimes with a 6" kit.they say to grind off the limiters for the cv so it does not bind. You might have to remove the shaft to take a closer look.

There is a cv joint Like you said the joint probably needs to replaced the clunking is probably cause its letting the joint bind which will cause you to break it. Not sure about your style but the kit is about 30 bucks then you should also change the joints. Just make sure you check it cause it can also just be the ujoints
