86 Chevy 1500 starter is sparking need some help

ok when i go to start my truck im getting no spark at the plugs  but i did hear ticking so i checked around and my starter solenoid was sparking is the starter bad and would that have anything to do with no spark? this is an 86 gmc 1500 with 305 4bbl carb 2wd

start by checking the wire connecting to the back of the starter, make sure they are tight and undamaged and not able to short out.

Are you getting power to the rest of the truck?

yea im getting power to the rest of the truck  im almost certain  ive got a short somewhere wires are getting hot  im almost certain i need a new wire harness

Does it happen when the key is on or just when your cranking the starter?
