Universal keyeless entry kit problem
« on: January 10, 2011, 07:14:11 pm »
Okay. I bought a univetsal keyless entry kit off of ebay and installed it in my 79 c20 2 door. I wired the flashers to my kc lights and everything worked fine. The next day I wired the other side of the flasher circuit to my oooga horn, it worked for 3 locks and unlocks and then, the flashers stopped working. When I press the lock button, the reciever box clicks, but doesnt lock. When I press the unlock button, it does unlock. No flashers or panic lights or anything. It has built in micro relayd, could one of those burnt out? Its really aggrevating. I wasted 50 bucks. I tried removing the horn from the circuit and it still wont work.

Is their a relay in your set up. If so is it burnt up. I have done the same thing with mine but I didn't add the horn.

Could be too much of a load.

I don't know what an ooga horn pulls, amperage wise, but maybe the combination of a horn AND KC lights <- Big Draw, burned out the micro relays.

You'll need bigger relays likely to pull it all.  Those tiny relays have to run actuators, horns, and lights.  and all the power goes through the keyless entry box.  They're really intended only for parking lights and a stock horn setup, and the stock horns have a relay, making them low power to run as far as the KE box is concerned.

I have this setup in my truck.

Wiring it up was a bit of a pain, as the instructions weren't the best, but it has worked flawlessly for 2.5 years now and works just as good in the heat as it does in 10 degree weather.  I would buy another Crimestopper brand KE.  It's been great.
