longbed stepside info
« on: January 22, 2011, 04:58:46 pm »
Did a long bed stepside exist in 78? And if not.... does anyone know if one would fit off a different year?

That's the one main thing I dislike about my truck!

I am pretty sure the only difference would have been the gas door versus just the gas cap and which side the gas tank was standard on.  The only stepside long bed I had was a 1981 but one fender was missing and I had a bed off a 1973 that bolted right on.  The only difference was the 73 gas tank filler was on the passenger side and the 81 was on the drivers side.  I just used a hole saw...

So even for something like that it'll still be more or less bolt on anywhere from 73-87(I assume)?

I'm going to hit up a junkyard north of here in search for one and I don't wanna lug it all the way back here if it won't fit. Longbed stepsides have to be rare, atleast in texas... as I've never seen one in person that wasn't on a pre 70's show car.

The gas fillers are the only variable.  otherwise they are a bolt on swap from 73-87

Personally I have only seen them on municipality trucks over the years.  My 81 was a former NIPSCO gas truck.

Short bed step sides are getting rare to find, but long bed are even harder.  I have only seen 2, and one is on fitz's truck ( I believe) on here..

Almost forgot, my son has a 1979 GMC K-15 factory long stepside as well. I also have 2 additional long stepside beds, 1 off a 1977 and 1 off a 1985.

What happened, did the east coast get all the long step side trucks.  I have been looking for 2 years out west and haven't found one that is worth saving yet..

I don't know about the east coast. I'm in Missouri, the midwest.

I agree,I could never figure that one out.
My 8' stepside came from a utility company truck that we found in the junkyard.
Although I love the look of stepside trucks I always thought that a fleetside would have been more practical for the municipalities/utility companies.

This is an 87' long step that I got for the cab. It was a Connecticut municipal truck with reading boxes on instead of fenders.

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

Looking at the construction of a stepside alone, probably a lot cheaper to make thus a lower selling price would be my guess.
