paint and assebly questions
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:07:36 pm »
I am getting close to putting paint on my 85 step side shorty. it has a 6" lift and 35" tires ad my rims are all black. I have 2 qestions. What color do you guys think for paint, I really like black but everybody is telling me i will regret it to hard to keep clean. i also really like deep blue but I see alot of trucks blue, dont like any two tones. I am thinking hard about a black cherry or something like that. looking for any cool pics of any solid colors or even any input at all. never had a vechile painted before. Also what about the step side steps and fenders do I leave theme off when I send it to the shop? do they leave them on and just paint them that way? also my bed is going to be made of wood ( I dont have the wood yet) do I put the wood in first or wait till after. Do they normaly take the box off and paint the bottom section? The paint guy I have is top notch but I have been houding him to death so I thought I would jut ask you guys. Also do I put some kind of seam sealer on the fenders. would the body guy do that or me?  I just dont ant to scratch this thing all to dog when i get it back. I have out my heart and soul into this thing and just want to do it right. This truck will never see anything more than the DQ or the coffee shop. just a somethi ng to sit in the yard and wax and take a sunday crusie. Wnated one of these things for ever I am pumped to get it painted in a few months! thanks for any input

the fenders should be off for paint. The box would need to be off for the painter to paint in between the box and cab. the wood should be installed after the paint.
who does what is between you and your painter, I would have him do the technical stuff or things that you are not comfortable with.
It really comes to your budget and how much you want to do too.
that being said; there really is no rule to how a paint job is done. It depends on what you want; the important thing is that your painter understands your goals and your budget. Generally speaking a color change takes a little more effort as the jambs door etc should be done too.
as far as black goes; mine is dark gray(almost black)-it takes a little more effort to keep it clean-but this truck is a weekend cruiser and something to take to the local car shows and have fun with it. everytime I take it out it pretty much gets a good dusting and fingerprints cleaned up bugs cleaned off etc. It does get a little old cleaning it all the time, but I imagine I would probably still do it no matter the color. Also waxing takes more effort as swirl marks will show up a easier on a dark color and that to me is the biggest downside to a very dark color, I wouldn't hesitate to paint it the same color if I were to do it again.
As far as that goes my work truck is black-I would not get black again for work.
