It has been my understanding that any reflective surface helps the radar bounce back. Plates have been made reflective because of the increase in vehicles with less and less chrome on them. I have never owned a radar detector in my life, I've been going on 14 years with out a ticket. Not saying I haven't been pulled over in that time. I go by gut instinct, if I haven't seen a cop in a while I know the odds are good that one is around, I mind my Ps, and Qs. I also judge by what traffic comming at me is doing. If they are all traveling close to the speed limit or are all bunched up like a parade. Chances are there is a cop around the corner, or over the hill. Plus the lay of the land, if there are good spots for the cop to hide, or a stretch of road thats inviting to haul the mail on I bet they like those areas. Target rich environment. I think allot of it is in your demeanor when the officer walks up to the vehicle. Plus when the blues go on I am pulled over before they even get turned around, if I was a cop I would think that meant hey this guy is honest, just probably wasn't paying attention. The other thing when i hand an officer my paper work I always include my permit to carry a concealed weapon. I think that lets them know I'm not just some dirtbag trying to pull on over on them. It is suprising how many times I have given that to an officer and he asks, " whats this " . Most of them thank me for letting them know etc. My best friend is a radar detector freak, wants to take his with us in my rig all the time. He gets about a ticket a year on average!
