Gas tank differences.
« on: February 26, 2011, 10:33:15 am »
I'm getting ready to order a new tank for my project 1985 GMC K1500 stepside, sitting on a 1975 K10 shorty frame. I have checked several websites for tanks, and all of them are giving different years for the tanks, Did they change? I know the Blazers and Suburbans had different tanks and the 1987 had a slightly different tank and sending unit.

Should I order the tank to match my frame year or the Body? I have like new straps and brackets from an 86 and I would like to use them. I'm finding the most common listings are 16 gallon 73-81 and 82-86. a couple other sites have listings for 73-76 and 79-81 or 80-84?

Many thanks in advance.

I believe you would order it according to the frame, but I don't know if the sending units are different.

Beastie is correct, the frame year is what you go by, also is the sending units are different between years and wether it is a single set up or a dual setup.

So a 73-81 it is then. She has the single tank, so the two line sending unit should work fine. I would think the straps and brackets should work also, there kinda pricey and hard to come by in good shape.

Thanks Guy's

have you already checked the fit of the brackets on the frame. The bolt pattern is different on the front bracket. The holes are in the bracket that line up to the frame but don't usually have the nuts attached. I put 75 brackets on the passengers side of my 86 I had to weld new nuts to the front bracket. As far as the tanks being different I also used the 75 tank and put a brand new sending unit for an 86 in it, had no problems.
