I had the same problem with my 79 a few years back that when I drove it, then turned it off for a minute or two, it wouldn't turn back on unless it sat for 20 minutes or so. It always turned on just fine when the engine was cold. It was the module in the distributor that went bad.You can also check to see if your choke opens all the way after two minutes of driving. When you restart a warm engine, the choke should be open all the way.
could it be the starter is getting to hot??
I'm not used to HEI so I don't have a clue how to test the coil either
