Dash Too Small
« on: May 22, 2002, 09:29:00 am »
Went to put a cd player in my 79 Sierra. The dash is too small to fit one in. I could trim the dash but the problem is there is metal behind it to hold the tape deck in. We'll say i trimmed that to but then there would be nothing solid to hold my cd player in with. What can i do? I already bought a 10 disk that plugs into your stock radio and plays through that, it works well but you dont get all of your sound adjustments like you have in a cd player. So i think i need to get myself a new deck. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my truck.  I put the cd player in the dash, above the ash tray.  It is mounted through the hole for the air conditioning ducting.  I dont have air so vaawaala, instant stero opening.  The stero fits nicely with the black trim on the dash pad too.  This does take some cutting and fabrication, but its not that bad.  I got mine hooked up in an afternoon.

Dont know if i could do that one or not. I might put A/C in my truck. Since its got all the hookups i might as well. When august gets here ill decide. :)  Im not too worried about looseing Power my 350 has plenty.
I thought i may be able to just bend the metal behind the dash backwards to give it something to attach to the metal case the cd player would come into with. Maybe they make a kit some place for this kinda thing?

I have the same problem. i want a cd player in my 85K10 but its got AC. So I looked at some remote controlled units, but they were too expensive for me. I think i gonna just buy a CD player and cut the opening in the dash to fit it, and make a small bracket to hold it in place.

I installed a cd player in the dash of my 81 Sierra Classic and had no problem at all with fit. I simply cut a hole to fit the cd player where the stock radio was and slipped it right in.

Simple fix..cut the metal as wide as you need then bend the metal back and use 1/2 inch zip ties to wrap it around the metatyou can put some rubber strips for adhesion in between the player and the metal..it will hold and wont give you any problems..I used to and haven't ever had a problem
