78 k20 350 wanting vortec heads
« on: March 15, 2011, 06:54:29 pm »
I just bought a 78 chevy k20. It has a strong running 350. I have been thinking about getting some vortec heads for it but don't really know all that much about swapping heads, and what all I will need to get to complete it. Any help would be great.

At least an intake. Others will chime in as well.

I've got vortec heads on another vehicle with a 350. I purchased them fully assembled from summit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-151124/

You will need a vortec style intake: http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part-Type/Intake-Manifolds-Carbureted/?keyword=vortec+intake

Center bolt valve covers: http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part-Type/Valve-Covers/Make/CHEVROLET/Valve-Cover-Mounting-Style/Centerbolt/Engine-Size/5-7L-350/?Ns=Rank%7cAsc

I purchased headers for my setup, but I believe if you don't get headers and a decent exhaust system, then you kinda take away from the full potential of the heads. I also reccomend getting a good gasket kit and bolt kit for everything from the from the carb on down.
This all went on a 69 camaro with a 350. Great bolt on power IMO. Waiting to have enough for another set!

Swapping heads is a chore. Mainly time consuming. Easier with the hood off but can still be done under the hood. When you get to that part let us know and I'm sure somebody will help.
