78 K10 4X4 (W/ 84 Model 305 Truck Motor) Wiring Issues
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:34:33 am »
hello all,

Great Forum! I am dealing with all of those dreaded starter issues on my 1978 K10. it has an 84 Model 305 from a truck. i ordered the remote mount solenoid and a mini starter to combat heat soak.

My Question is about wiring. I hate electrical. in all the included instructions there are only 3 wires to hook up, only there were about 5 coming off of the starter. i have identified the ignition and main power wires, but there are some others that i have no idea about.

1) what is the post located on the firewall with one wire to the starter and on to the alternator. it is a solenoid looking post located next to the brake booster.

2) it is a manual transmission, do i have/ need to deal with a clutch switch?

3) overall, how many wire should be wired into the new solenoid from summit? the truck has no accessories except lights and wipers. it seems like there are about 3 wires coming from the junction block on the drivers side firewall. what are these and which are important?

This is no show truck. it is soley a mud toy and having running well is all i care about. accesseries are not important at all.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

1. chuck chevy truck pages shows a wiring diagram with and without the distribution block on the firewall, you can elimintate this and wire directly from the starter to alt.
-Then wire the battery directly to the starter.

2. I would make it work as a matter of saftey and pride (kind of hack not to). To by pass it you only need to connect the two wires, I would only do this for test purposes(to test the circuit/switch).
note your ignition switch and saftey switch are on the same circuit.

3.batt, alt, ign.

If its a mud truck your money would have been better spent for a gear drive starter. It fixes the heat soak problem, and also doesn't get filled up with mud as easily.

Blazin - im installing a gear reduction mini starter with it. All the wiring was so bad on the truck i figured i would start fresh. considering the miles of threads i have read about starting issues.

1980 C10- Thanks for the tips. on #1 when you say wire the battery direcrtly to the starter, you mean the solenoid from summit right? then from that to the starter. and from that same post on the summit solenoid i could run straight to the alt?  that would get the same result right?

and for #2 all of those safety features are inside the firewall and i just have to worry about that one ign. wire. am i understanding you right?

#1 that's what I meant, make sure you use a fusible link between the solenoid and alt.
#2 Exactly-although it is just one saftey feature
