Any scrappers using there chevy's?
« on: April 23, 2011, 01:27:00 am »
I from time to time go scrapping to get metal etc the prices are good right now. It's crazy by me people are driving 2000 and up trucks there nice to.. People need money I guess. I use mine but if I do never beat it uo I have a sprayed in bedliner and diamond plate on sides to protect it.. With the gas prices though it does not make much sense to be scrapping in a old truck. Maybe a s10 with a trailer on the back lol.. Anybody else out there use there like this and in the past? One day I want to finish the truck off and park it for now she working lol..

All the scrap trucks I see around are Fords, maybe they weigh in, pull them up, get out and walk up to the weigh out scale, or at least thats what they should do! :D

Won't make any money using an S10. One they don't carry much, two if you load them a few times they are not going to take it. I use both my 3/4 and 1 ton dump for scrapping. 3/4 for light stuff cans, batteries etc. The 1 ton for the heavy loads. I have rolled across the scale a few times with 7,500 lbs plus on it.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

ive had my 1ton weighing 10000lbs and it had no probs doing it uphill. then again i got a dumptruck motor in it the nice 366 bb and man it pulls i love the way i can do stuff with it and not have a issue like a trailer we were hauling off weighing in at 1000lb fell on the bed rail and did nothing to it but put a lil bend in it not even a half in difference from it. these trucks are the best to me and are super strong even rusted out like min they can still do whats asked

I got about 3500 lbs of steel i hauled off a couple of weeks ago in my truck.  Had to do it in 2 loads though because it all wouldn't fit.

I'm down here in Texas and there seems to be a lot of scrappers.  How much does about 4000 pounds go for?  None of the scrappers around here will share any details.

$320 here but thats just cause prices are back down do to everyone here is back to doing it from the warm weather. we had prices at 14 per hundred and it would be 560 for 4000lbs of metal. so its a good business just you have to keep the metal coming to gain profit

The prices are what the steel mills set them at there still pretty high.. Out here say going by even pounds like 12 and half cents a pound.. Which is really good sometimes it's a 7 cents etc and you just trying make your gas money back.. Learn what days have garbage days go early go late etc etc.. Get some hot water heaters and a washer you doing alright.. It's not a great gig but I put on my tunes drive my rig and hope I make some money.. Good to see there others doing the same..

Thats what I use to haul my junk cars to the crusher and back from the auction. A 2000 Chevy crew cab hooked up to an 18' Big Tex trailer with an 9K Superwinch on it.
BigChevy, When you say $320 is that for #1 steel?
I don't really deal with #1 steel, but around here in Mass scrap vehicles are going for $220 a ton. Batteries get $9 each, aluminum wheels run $12 each if you leave them on the car. Converters bring the $$, I average about $100 a converter.
As far as fuel goes, there is a big advantage with dealing with complete vehicles as opposed to just steel. Lots of free fuel to be had from these junkers.
Getting back to our trucks, I plan to make my 81 stepside my hauling truck once I put the big block in it.

fitz what i was talking about is for just mixed steel that goes through the crusher right on the spot. it like 10 bugs for #1 steel i believe. so far the vehicles ive gotten to scrap i hate to see go are 1940-1940 model cars and trucks so not cats or gas as everything is rusted out. we pulled the back part off a cab just by hand no tools or anything its that rusted. guy that gave it to us is giving it for free we just have to get them out of a gully which he is helping us do with a tractor

Most of the cars I send to the crusher still run. Around here the emission laws are fairly strict (vehicles 1996 and newer get emission tested/1995 and older just get a safety check). This sends allot of vehicles to an early grave.
I've got a few oldies and chevy trucks along the way as junk. The strangest 1 yet was a 1954 Morris Minor woody wagon that was right hand drive. It was stored in a shed for 25 years. That 1 I saved.

the cars we got so far are so rusted from being in a gully that you can kick the fenders and they will fall off. when getting a old ford truck frame out it busted in two from the rust

I use my 87 V3500, yeah the gas prices suck but you can carry a pretty good sized load with an 8 ft. bed.  I generally don't ever even get enough in two loads to use the weight rating but I got the 1 ton for the right price.  I couldn't see using an s10 as the bed is so small though I am most limited by volume not weight rating. The majority of the trucks I see are 90's half or three quarter tons.  But you do occasionally see a new body style one,  the last week or so I saw an 08 or so nice short bed single cab with a ton of scrap in it, just garbage picked.  I mean I can see if you had a bunch of copper or something just throw it in the bed but those trucks are so nice I wouldn't want to put a load of crap in it new, but hey thats what its for it's a pickup truck not a cadillac.
