flowmaster???
« on: August 09, 2003, 12:57:00 pm »
OK, I'm trying to make my truck loud, i want to make the neighbors mad so i went and bought a flowmaster 40 series muffler. I have heard that if i wanted loud then the 40 series is what to go with. i had it put on today and im kinda dissapointed, it is a little louder but not what i expected. does it take a while to break in or whats going on?

I think it will always sound the same. I think the only mufflers that really break-in are glasspacks, the fiberglass gets blown out and they get louder after a while.

Mufflers usually don't "break-in"

Of course I used to have friends who would "break-in" thier glass-packs as soon as they got them.  They would get the garden hose and soak the interior of the glasspacks, then run the truck hard to get that exhaust temp up there and break-down the fiberglass in the pack.

I wouldn't recomend it though.

we are in the same boat i put headers and true dual flowmaster series 40 behind my 350. Ive heard plenty of stangs and camaro's with similar setups and they are nice and loud, mine seems pretty docile really. ITs weird

well... personally i dont understand the concept of really loud vehicles.. i think it is pretty useless... but if u want to make it louder try going with a shorter exaust system.. i have mine running in front of the rear wheels... with muffs and cats... and its PLENTY loud....anyways... like i said either make the exaust shorter or take out the cat.......

If you run headers without cats or muffs, it gets really loud.  :eek

But I spent a lot of money on my stereo, so I prefer to listen to it instead of my exhaust....  ;)

Headers will make a difference, but if you want it to thump, change the cam.

Also, lose the cats and don't run the pipes out the rear.  Anything past the cab is legal.

Glasspacks

I have Dually all teh way, custom ( I happen to work at a shop) custom bent exhaust and glasspacks before the rear axle with turndowns. Its a nice beefy note that will set teh alarms off on any small car. I have a reg 350 with an auto and stock manifolds, I guess the only thing louder is a straight pipe, also I noticed that my truck got a bit quieter after my packs broke in, It got a bit deeper and lost that 'pop'.
