Want to build an engine for when this 305 crops out...
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:22:38 pm »
Here are my thoughts.

I have an 85 305 longbed reg cab 2wd truck.

I want to run the 305 I have in it until it can no longer run without being completely rebuilt.

I have an engine stand that is dieing for an engine to be cradled on it...

Here are the requirements:

No smog or egr valve
Minimal vacuum lines
big displacement
ease of swapping into frame

What should I look for to completely rebuild and what should I be wary of?

383 would be the easiest, as far as swapping. If you want to build the engine yourself, Summit Racing sells a 383 prepped block for about 600. Thats a good start since all the machining is done. A mild cam will give you tons of torque.

Tell us what you want to use the truck for so we can give specifics.

I am mainly going to use it back to forth from work when the weather's too bad for my motorcycle.  Mainly in town stuff.  It may go on short highway jaunts if need be- but not it's primary function.

I am eventually going to restore this 85, just don't want all the extra smog stuff and vacuum lines involved.

Sgt Del got a good deal on a built 383 off ebay. And he still runs all the smog equipment.
