OK...i got a stupid question...
« on: November 06, 2006, 12:35:00 am »
Heres my problem- I have 4 different vehicles that i drive and one good stereo. My question is this: is there any way i can make the stereo easily removable so i can put it in another vehicle without too much hassle?  I am thinking along the lines of a plug for the cigarette lighter similar to the ones made for CB radios. I have a small drink holder type floor console that i take from truck to truck and i would probably mount a bracket to that and just put connectors on the speaker wires to make the change over quicker. All the vehicles have decent speakers in them.
I'm not too concerned with memory or anything like that, i mostly want it for the CD player and i dont have money to spend on 3 more head units. Thanks.  :eek

You can go to radio shack and buy a male cig lighter plug w/ built in fuse.  use a guage and figure which wire is the pos. and which is neg.   Usually the striped wire is the pos. or red--depends on type of cig plug you get.

Go and get four plugs that are similar and wire the speakers of each vehicle to each plug.  You will have to extend the speaker wires a little probably. PUt the other side of one of the plugs on the head unit for speakers.
Then just plug the speaker plug in and plug the cig lighter in and you should be ready.

If you want radio---if your antenna wire is long enough on each vehicle, that just slides in the ant. spot on your head unit. l

Thanks SgtDel-

I thought it might work like that cause thats what i use for my CB radio so i can pull it out and put it in another truck. I've already got connectors on the speaker wires so i'll probably go get a dual outlet cig lighter plug so i can run the stereo and CB at the same time.

What kind of vehicles do you have. I have a few good factory cd players laying around collecting dust?

I've got a 1988 Chevy 1-ton crew cab dually and a 1971 C-10 and a 1990 4x4 S-10 blazer. I figured its easier to make the good stereo interchangeable than spend $500 to $600 per vehicle to put one in each.
