suburban speakers

Hello, i have a 1987 suburban. i put in an alpine head unit and replaced the 3.5`s in the dash and the 4x10`s in the rear but it`s just not loud enough when i have the rear seats up. so my question is, has anyone put subs in the place of the 4x10`s by cutting a bigger hole? i`d like to put in  8 inch round subs but i dont know if they will fit due to the depth of most subs. thanks for any help.

just by adding an amp you should hear a differance in the volume of the rear speakers.there is about 3in. of clearance where the factory speakers are located and most 8in. subs need at least 4in. I am putting a pair of 10's in the back of my blazer. they need 6 in. so i had to do a little customizing,they are on a 45 degree angle (to the front)and this gives them about 8in. of clearance.If you want to go with 8 in.,i had a pair of kenwood w1705 that needed 4in. clearance so if you could make a mounting plate about an inch or so to give you a little more room they might work(if you can find them).i do not know if they still make them though.  good luck

thanks brofish. i`ll try making some spacers. i was planning on buying a 4 channel amplifier to power the woofers if i get them in and some of the kick panel speaker enclosures and do away with the 3.5 dash speakers. thanks for the help.

A little trick I did on those rear speakers was to cut open a plastic gallon milk jug the size of the speaker in the rear and mounted it to the speaker. A lot of the bass and mid bass from the speakers gets lost behind the panels. This stops that. I also slightly angled the speakers so they were pointing upwards and towards the front of the cab a bit. Highs are directional so you want to try to direct them a bit. I then added a 12" sub in the back. I built a generic box for the moment. In my last burb I had a 10" JL audio 10w6 mounted in a sealed box and sunk it into the interior panel. It actually stuck out about 1" It was a very long box but took up very little cargo room. 1" of width from the back of the truck to wheel well. I am going to build the same style of box for this 12" sub.  I have eclipse 3.5" speakers in the dash, with  cerwin Vegas in the rear and Currently a pioneer 12' sub that will be replaced when I build the new box. (before you make fun of my pioneer 12 it is only a temp speaker I use while building my boxes and picking my sub)
