Most amps have a subwoofer out (rca plugs)
If not, you can just use regular speaker outputs to sub, it would be best to have another amp for the mid and high.

As far as the head unit, most have rca plugs for pre-amp out. Or, you can split the regular speaker outputs and have on branch go to your amp---if you do it this way, you may not have balance/fader capabilities.

Most amps have volume control to adjust according to your desire.

If your amp is really high, like 500 watts or higher, may wanna get a capacitor so all your alternator amps wont be used up during a really bass-y song--you don't want the music to fade during each beat.

I run an 8 guage wire directly from the battery to amp, with an inline fuse (50amp) really close to the battery, to may 1000 watt puppy. I got 2 12 inch woofers behind the seat---I now have seat massage--not bad for a 79 pickup.

My suburban is very similar, but only has 500 watt amp--she sounds so sweeeet.
