Double din?
« on: March 11, 2007, 09:40:00 pm »
Has anyone seen a double din in a 73-87 truck? Maybe just a custom set up right in the middle of the dash? pics?

i did that install in a 79 gm about 8 years ago, and doubt id ever do it again. hacked up my dash pad and dash to fit a double din pioneer cass/cd, was easy to do, i cut the hole where the center vent would be, mind you this was a non a/c truck. looked great until smoke rolled out of the stereo 3 weeks later. a double din wasnt common then, so i had a nice big empty hole in my dash and sold truck that way as well. i gotta admit tho i still drool over double din with nav.

That is what I was thinking. A full nav/entertainment system that can be seen from the passenger seat. (would do headrest displays for the rear seats)

ok so i retract my statment i made earlier. went to our tiny sound store for a new amp, ended up ordering a pioneer avic-d3. needless to say i still need an amp lol. im hoping i can cut out the ashtray area and build a fiberglass enclosure and relocate fuel tank switch id have enough room from the heater. either that or see if i can relocate the heater controls somehow. no idea how deep unit is, i suppose i got get them off pioneers site. should be more worried about putting my headers on so i can check my oil lol. new engine has driversside dipstick and my manifolds bury the dipstick hole.

Why not just in the dash pad directly above the ashtray area?  I have seen radios mounted there. Plenty of space behind the dash, just cutting too, no fab work.

considered it, but thats exactly how i did the 79 i had. my 84 has ac so id rather keep the vent in the pad. i checked out the ashtray idea and theres lots of room, just have to reroute the ducting for the lower drivers ac vent, and fiberglass out the center of the dash an ich or two where stereo is going. havent gotten unit yet but i found out i need to get a install kit from pioneer as well, these units dont come with a cage
