Newbie question. Can I put 16x8 rims with 31" tires on stock full size '87 4x4 without problems or modifications?

yeah aslong as the 31in tire is made for a 16 rim.
31in tires had plenty of room under my 85 k10 before it was lifted.

Where did you find 31s for 16" rims. I was just loking for some yesterday for a budy of mines Ranger.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Sorry... was misled by the guy wanting to sell the rims. I did call a local tire distributor and he told me that for 16" rims, the tires are sized 235/75/16 etc..... I'm trying to decide whether to restore my oem rims/caps or go to aluminum rims. I like the oem look, but have seen some american racing rims that look nice. Has anyone out there bought these replacement centercaps for the 80's 6 lug wheel ??. Chevy Duty has them  but they are made out of a type of plastic. Look like oem, but much less expensive.
