I have a 454 c10 and I keep adjusting the belts and they will not quit whining and squeeling! Could it be because they are old?

worn glazed cracks can cause a whine. what i do is buy some belt dressing and spray it on one belt at a time till you find where the noise is coming from then replace that belt but if both belts look the same replace them or keep spares with ya

Squirt a little WD-40 on the belts, if they quiet up instantly replace the belts...

If the belts have slipped enough it is also possible that the shives are all burnished and a new belt might slip and squeal too! At that time it is time to replace the belts and shives.

sorry...it is spelled Sheave, but pronounced Shiv. That is what your V-belts turn around.

They quit squeaking with new belts but I see that pulley is off rotation or warped? What's a shiv? It need a harmonic balancer because it seems to cause a lil vibration driving down the road!

A sheave is the pulley. If you're working on industrial equipment and call it a pulley you'll get laughed at. For some reason on motors it usually gets called a pulley, but I'm not sure technically speaking if one is incorrect.

Another thing you could try is to take some steel wool and run it in the pulley/sheave grooves. Not too scratchy as this will eat the belt. Sand paper may also work.

Another thing i've found is that soap works temporarily. But you have to do this quite often.

Anyways...worked on boats and industrial equipment since I was a kid and both my dad and my uncle called the wheel of a v-belt system a sheave. Basically a sheave is a wheel with a groove in it for rope, cable or a belt to run in. Technically a pulley is a flat wheel for a belt to run on (like the automatic tensioner wheel on your modern multi-rib V-belt drive), or is the system of sheaves and rope, cable or belt like a block and tackle or a come-a-long.

The point I was trying to make is that if your belts have been slipping for a long time, you replace the belts and still have problems with belts slipping, it may be that your sheaves are burnished and in need of replacing. I have had to do that before.
