How do I roll up my electric window?
« on: August 09, 2011, 03:54:40 pm »
How would I go about rolling up my drivers side electric window if the window motor is not working?  Do I have to replace the motor first to roll it up, but then again doesn't it have to be rolled up to get the motor and regulator detached from the window? If possible I would like to be able to manually roll it up some how, ( I think I heard of a way to do it with a drill, can't exactly remember how, or if I might be thinking of the tailgate glass on a burb.) until I can find time to get a motor from the salvage yard.

You are going to have to remove it.  Did it just stop working?

It kind of started to not want to roll up every now and then , and one day it just quit on me. I checked the two wires coming from the motor to see it might be the switch, and tried a new switch, but no luck.

Get a test light or meter and see if its getting + and - to the two wires to the motor.  From memory I believe you can unplug the switch, trace which wires go from that plug to the motor and jump + and - to those wires if its not getting voltage.  That'll get it up until you find the problem.  Motor, switches, relays, wiring, it could be several things.  If its the motor sometimes you can beat on the inside of the door with your hand while fiddling with the switch to get it to work temporarily.

Like jaredts said, but if you are getting power to the plug-in at the window motor, then your motor is bad and it will have to be replaced.

I checked the wires from the motor to the switch with a multi meter and no change in resistance when I pushed the switch up and down.I,m not to good with electrical problems.Should I have the meter set for ohms? I also tried to jump the wires to get the window up and no luck. It is a 4 door switch on a burb. All of the other windows roll up slow but they do roll up. I don't think it is the switch. I even tried to wire the motor to one of the other switches to see if a switch I knew worked would roll it up,still no luck. I know a new motor isn't a whole lot of $, But having 8 kids school shopping killed any money for the truck. I am basically trying to find a temporary way to jerry rig the window into going up until I can get some cash together. There's been some pretty big rain storms here in central Ohio lately, and it sucks having to use a trash bag every time the rain comes, let alone not being able to drive without getting drenched in a down poor. I appreciate any and all suggestions given. Thank you

You need to see if you have 12 volts D/C current at the motor for the window, (not resistance or ohms).  If you are not that good with electrical, start at the problem and start tracing back to the source.
So if you have no 12 v at motor, then go to your switch and check right before switch for 12v.  If you have 12v before switch and no 12v after switch, most likely you have a bad switch.  You need to do this with all the componets in the system for your power windows to see where you are losing power.
