Starting Problem This Morning......Fuel Pump ?
« on: August 22, 2011, 01:35:44 pm »
Hey guys.  Been a while.  For some reason this morning, my engine wouldn't start.  After about 25 min, finally cranked and idled rough.  Would die when giving gas.  427 with Holley Street Avenger 770....MSD Pro Billet HEI.  Finally, started and everything was normal.  What are the signs of a mechanical fuel pump getting ready to fail?  I got a new one when I finished the build back in June but who knows how long it sat on the shelf at the parts house.  I have noticed recently that when cruising at about 55-65 mph, every now and then there is a very slight hesitation.  Just wanna address it before being stranded.
Thanks,
Fidd

I always thought when a mechanical fuel pump went bad it would leak from the weep hole.

Thanks Fitz.  I will check on that when I get off work.

fitz are you thinking about a water pump? dont think it would be smart to be leaking fuel if it was getting ready to fail, but idk. next time it acts up take the breather off and move the throttle on the carb see if you see any fuel being sprayed, almost seams like it was dirty but it could also be something electrical so after that see if its getting spark. is it just rotating with out any signs of trying to start, any pops or bangs or hesitation

I guess it was just flooded or had "trash" in the carb.  Has been running fine ever since.  I'm still gonna keep an extra fuel pump with me just for precaution.  Thanks for the suggestions and replies.

haha the fuel pump wont leak at all even if it fails. i would check your fuel lines... if any are newer and rubber, that could be your problem. i went through TWO brand new fuel pumps before i realized that i had a small bit of rubber(reinforced!) line that was jelly soft thanks to ethanol, and when my brand new pump pumped...it was collapsing under the pressure.
