Good classic car another state how check vin?
« on: August 22, 2011, 05:35:48 pm »
Hey guys was thinking of buying a classic car online have it shipped to me I have done it twice. How ever I like check the vin make sure it's not ever been stolen or even a salvage. I have the vin I called the police I'n Illinois they said to look online they have sites that check it. I know anything 80 and back can't be tracked by car fax. What can I do see if the car is legit?

If it is a classic and real, the owner should have some kind of documents backing it up.

Check with IL DMV or the seller's state DMV?

What car is it?

Maybe I should go with above posters advice call where the sate it comes from. Illinois DMV is not to good they take forever to pick up the phone. Than they act like your wasting there time I don't want get a car with a bad vin or salvage title I have plenty of old cars never checked. I've seen so many lose out I'm changing my thinking. Not sure they tell me much as I not the owner.

You can always ask the seller to get the info from their DMV and mail it to you or send pics of the paperwork. If they really want the car sold, they would do it if they arent hiding anything. Otherwise it might be a hint.

If you have friends in high places they can run the vin. I don't know if it will tell past owners but will tell who owns it

No friends in high places just low places from being from Chicago I grew up and learned. I checked to do a check pay 10 and it could take a month. The seller do the same take a week.. No websites do these checks just want see if it's stolen or salvage etc?
