5.8 in Mineral City. I don't even live close but felt it. Was at home on the computer and heard and felt the vibration getting louder. A glass of water on the table was rippling. My first thought was a freak wind was coming through so looked outside and leaves were calm, that was freaky !
Opened the door to go outside and the cat was coming in wide eyed and ears laid back.
Afterward went in and sat in a chair and it finally dawned on me, an earthquake? Called a friend and was confirmed over the radio. Last one here was in 1897, don't remember that one. Glad I don't live in California, that was nothing for them. First one though, maybe some aftershocks tomorrow ?

No sir, you keel your huumidity with those temps. I've worked in them before. We'll be fine as long as we don't run out of water.

The first thing that comes to my mind is " anybody hear of a little book call Revelations " ?  How about Nostradamus ?  Funny how some things people wrote centries ago some times come true.

reports are coming in today that animals were going crazy prior to the quake. hmmmm.  I believe pets sometimes have unusual activity, say, perhaps 2 or 3 days out of a 365 day year.   Those few that had pets go crazy prior to the quake are trying to make something out of it, when the law of averages say on any day, there will be some animals act unusual.  Any one human will act unusual at least a few days a year--but if one of those days happened to have a quake, is there a sixth sense?

I believe there may be. I remember seeing a security video (from a previous earthquake, I think in California) of a dog in someone's office building and moments before the quake, it jumped up and just took off like someone shot him with a BB gun. I remember too that the tsunami that hit a few years ago, the people said that the elephants in the area took off headed for higher ground. So maybe they do know something in advance. Just my thoughts.

Wow!  I feel for all of you that experienced this.  From what I've seen on the news it looks like there was widespread damage.  Was anyone killed?

We in Alaska get frequent small 'quakes.  You never get used to them for good reason.  My old house had closet doors on rollers thiat would rattle at the slightest provocation.  Many times during the night I awoke to the sound of those doors rattling and instantly knew what was happening.  Most of the movement is a slight undulation usually right to left or vice versa.  Other times up and down movement.  Usually last only 4-5 seconds.  When I was in the Aleutions they were more intense and staccato like.  Usually lasted only a couple seconds but would knock things off the walls or shelves.  Really make you sit up and take notice.

The biggest thing we worry about up here, other than the obvious damage to property and life, is loss of power and natural gas.  Most everyone has enough food and water to get by for a week or two.  Being w/o power for a week or two could be catastrophic, especially in winter.  I eventually want my house wired for an external generator that could be isolated from back-feeding electricity into the power grid and endangering linemen.  Cost is ~$4,000, to do it properly.  It's something I will likely do in the future.

I believe animals have a sense that we as humans don't. Their hearing, smell, and sight in some cases is far superior to ours so why wouldn't they have a sense about things most of us don't have.
I have heard many stories of animals acting differently than their normal behavior just prior to an earth quake, or other natural disaster.
I also believe that they can form mental bonds with their owners. years ago I had a lab husky cross. I rarely came home at the same time every day from work. It could vary by several hours. My girl friend at the time would routinely tell me that he would start getting restless, whine, and pester her about 10 minutes before I got home no mater what day of the week, or time of day. She swore you could just about set a timer, and it would go off as I drove in the yard. We firmly believed that he could sense I was on my way.

ah, it was just your unique exhaust pipes.  ;)

Yeah, there could be something to it. There are many things we don't know.  Why do crime and mental health episodes in humans increase during a full moon.  This, I know happens from first-hand experience of being on-call dealing w/ mental subjects as part of my job.  I dreaded full moon nights.  ER staff hate them too.

If we could tap into animal senses and figure the reasoning or 'how' of it, perhaps we could predict more natural episodes like volcanoes or quakes.  My lazy golden was just laying on the floor prior to the quake, but, he became one spazzed out dog when we were rockin and rollin'.

I feel fortunate to live in an area that doesn't experience earthquakes, and I myself have never experienced an earthquake.

I think the worst we get is the odd tornado, but usually small in comparison to other areas.

No floods, no hurricanes, no mudslides, no volcanoes, no earthquakes.  Heavy snowfall here isn't nearly as much heavy snowfall in other areas, however we do get some decent cold days.

And people wonder why I like the prairies.... ;D

We had a minor tornado about 20 miles from my house last Sunday. Couple hundred yard wide path, about a mile long.
