Would these 16x7 8 lug "trailer" wheels fit?
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:23:44 pm »
Has anyone ever ran "trailer wheels" on their truck (not training wheels, haha)?  Seriously though, I've been hunting craigslist/ebay for a set of 16" alloy wheels in 8x6.5 lug pattern for a long time now looking for a deal on some classic looking wheels.  I found a set of decent 16x7 wheels being advertised as trailer wheels that are in good shape and pretty cheap.  The backspacing looks good (about 4").  The hub bore is a hair under 5" according to my tape measure.  Load rating is more than necessary.  My only concern is that the wheels don't have tapered (conical) lug nut seats so require sleeved/shank style lug nuts (also called mag lugs).  Doing some searching online I see this used to be common on older wheels.  Looks like many places online still sell shank style lugs (about $40 for a set of 32).  He doesn't have any center caps with them but I might be able to find something generic online that will work.  Any reason these wouldn't work for me?

I always thought that trailer rims were not as wide as automobile rims, I would ask a trailer place if they are made any differen't, they might be overkill for a truck.

Thanks for the feedback.  It sounds like if they fit and are the right size (dimensions, backspacing, etc) that there is no reason I couldn't use them.  I like their looks and the lugs are the only issue.  I'll use that as a negotiation tactic.  They are already reasonably priced ($240 for a set of 5) but maybe he'll come down a bit more since I'll need $40-50 of lugs.

Good luck and that sounds like a reasonable thing to say to him for a cheaper price.
