Wrong Power Steering Pump?
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:23:26 pm »
After finally figuring out what year engine I actually have and getting the correct replacement power steering pump, I noticed that the new pump sits in the reservoir at a different angle than the old pump and reservoir. When I try to lay the bracket on the new pump it won't fit right, the bolt holes are correct but it appears that the pump needs to be rotated a bit to fit the bracket properly.  Does anyone know if there is a way to turn the it or do I have the wrong pump again??

Wrong pump, post some pictures of your brackets and pulleys and we might be able to steer you in the right direction.  You may have a newer engine however the brackets may be stock to your truck or one similar depending on the exhaust manifolds.  My $.02

Here are the pics of the pump pulley and bracket, the pulley and bracket are off the old pump (which has already been turned in for core) and the pump bolt holes match but the reservoir sits in the wrong spot.

Looking at both my pumps they appear that your pump is wrong compared to them.  If you could rotate the housing clockwise some it would all line up.  I am sorry that I don't have one with the pulley off that I could take a picture of or else I would.  I just went and took 3 pictures, I have to crop, resize and will post up in a few minutes.  It almost looks like the bracket is different than what mine is.  What I have is a non-AC 1987 C10 with a 5.0L

Sorry for the brief delay, had to power up the laptop, transfer pics yada yada.  Anyway here is what was part of a 1987 C10 non-AC truck with a 5.0L engine.  Something don't look right to me on your brackets.  Can you place the bracket alone on your engine and post a pic?

What year engine did you get the pump for?  Bracket looks different but may be an older style.

How are they sitting in the wrong spot?  did you match the new pump to the old one?  They year of the motor is irrelevant if it is a Gen I SBC.

Sorry, got caught up talking to the neighbor then had to bring in the groceries.  The pump I got at Pep Boys they matched up is from an 82 Chevy pickup, when I looked at the pump the bolt pattern matched the old one but Pep Boys and I neglected to notice it was sitting in the reservoir at a different angle than my original and unfortunately I turned in the core that day, which was last week. I don't know if this will help but my engine code on the back of the block is:14010201 which when looked up says 80-85. Here is some pics of the bracket on the motor.

Interesting, I bet the brackets are either from a van or car, unless the older SB did it that way before 82.  I just looked at my 85 with AC and it is the same as I have pictured.

So far no one can tell me what year pump I need or if it came off a certain model vehicle. I think I might have to try to match up the bracket at the parts store. Now I feel really stupid for not checking my old one vs. the new one closer before turning it in.   ???

If you have any pick-n-pulls or wrecking yards that allow you to walk around, take your bracket and see if you can't find something that matches up having a SB Chevy engine.
