87 TBI pulleys

I'm needing either someway to have a double V-belt pulley for my alternator or maybe swap over to the later pulley set like i had on my 87 r10, as it has the one wide serpintine belt on the alternator.

the alt. i have it pulling too much for the single Stock V-belt to take.  either the belt slips, or i have to overtighten the pulleys.  neither is good.

If I get a double groove v-belt pulley for the alt, the problem is finding the corresponding water pump and crank pulley to go with it.

If i get the set from a TBI engine, will my current A6 A/C compressor and 78 P/S pump still line up correctly using the newer pulleys?

If they're cheap, I may just go find a set and try this out.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if this will help you in your situation, but worth a try anyways.

My 1986 has both v-belts and a serpentine belt. 

V-belts for the a/c and steering pump, while the alternator has the serpentine belt.  Used to have an air pump run off the serpentine as well, but I removed it. 

Seems to work fine, perhaps that setup would work for you as well.

My 86 k10 had the same seyup as ssapach my 86 trans am had the same too. I may have a few extra pullies and alternators laying around I can go through if there is something you need. Been putting all my smallblock stuff in tote in the attic or giving them away trying to get everthing I own on the lsx route lol.

My 87 Has a serp belt for the alt and vbelts for everything else....

Sorry I left something out of my first post..

Meant to add it also had the V-belts on PS pump and AC.

I'm just wondering if all that will line up fine with the PS and AC pulley i have now.  hopefully I'd just have to change the alt, water pump and crank pulley.

I'd go the route of switching over to a full serpintine setup, but I already replaced all the accessories recently.  I have a new PS pump, alternator, water pump and AC compressor.  dont wanna throw all that away.... yet.

Since screamins 86 had that setup, were 86 and 87 the only years?  I had just assumed 87 was the first year.

I cant find any at any of the yards around here, the pickins are slim.

Screamin, Shoot me a PM if you have these pulleys layin around.  I need the Crank pulley, water pump pulley, alternator pulley (including any spacers under the pulley on the alternator) and maybe the PS pulley if you think it's different than what i have on my 78.  the PS pulley on my 78 is a double belt pulley.  I think They'll work, or I'll just make em work...

I'm almost certain I have the crank alt and water pump pullie. Like I said I had that same setup on my 86 trans am then used them on my 82 trans am and when I sold the motor I kept all the accesories. Ill look through my garage tonight or tomorrow and see what I can find.

here is what i have. actualy come to think of it these may be the actual stock ones from my k10 i think i used the other ones i had on the truck since they were already nicely painted from the last builds they were on lol.

Also, to whoever's reading this...  will a pulley for a 10si/12si fit on a cs130 alternator?

And I'll have to make this 10si/12si pulley work on it.  if i have to ill have a machine shop make the pulley hole bigger, or have a ring made to make it smaller.

note:  anybody who is interested in this alternator:
I don't know the quality, never tried them before, but I'm going to try this one.

through E-mails, they said:  That it is a direct bolt in for a 10si/12si  and specifically for my 78 C20 with a 350sb.

they also said if you get the one with the "Plug-in Regulator with harness for use with gauges only"  --- it plugs right into the stock harness and will function as a 3-wire alternator (so no cutting the stock harness)

What do you guys think about that alternator?  I'm going to try it and I'll give my thoughts on it in my build thread when I recieve it.  should be in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

screamin sent me the pulleys, they look great!

I'm kinda injured right now.  I'm in an arm sling, but when I'm able to, I'll get them cleaned up and painted and I'll put what i find out about them in this thread.

Only thing I kinda recall from my 87 was that I had to put washers under the PS pump bracket to get it to line up properly, but otherwise everything was fine.   This was on a 1973 400 I fitted all the TBI stuff to.  We'll see, either way its gonna work.

No problem! I don't remember if I had washers on te setup I ran on my k10 but all I can say is once you get them on it sould be pretty easy to see if you need some sort of spacer.

I gave them to my dad yesterday to take to work and bead blast, and he'll get them primered for me too.

Awesome! I'm still trying to remember if I had any type of spacer on the water pump. I had a new pump on my truck from autozone and don't think I had and spacers. The way I wad it on another car I was using the original pump from my 86 trans am and had no spacers.

when i had this setup in my 87, on the stock 305 TBI, there were no spacers originally, it just ended up something was a little  off on the earlier 400 block, but it wasn't anywhere near a big deal.

I got my 3 new Goodyear Gatorback belts ordered and Dad got the pulleys done for me.  He bead blasted them and painted them with clear hard hat paint.  They look like pewter.



Now I'll have to give him my PS pulley too. 

Also figured out, if the PS pulley needs to be moved forward to line up, I'll just leave the PS pulley up the amount needed on the shaft, then dont have to mess with spacers.

I'm hoping the Belts I got will fit.  I bought the serp belt for an 86, and the rest for a 78.  the belt dimensions are the same section wise, but i hope the length works out, as the new crank pulley looks a fair bit larger dia. than the old crank pulley.  well I'll let you all know.  When this works out, this might make a good tech page to help people with high-AMP alternators when the old V-belt doesn't have the grip to turn it at high loads.  I'll let you guys know the differences and how the math works out and what speed everything will be turning for each pulley set.

I like small projects that take some thinking.  beats big manual labor intensive jobs every time.   

I'm happy to have a light job, as I've got a torn ligament in my left shoulder and still had to do major work to both my parents vehicles, all the while my truck still need attention it hasnt gotten for 6 weeks now.     dang cars, old and new, they're all out to get me this week.
