New here, have a problem with my 84 k10..

Hey guys, i'm new here..

I got an 84 k10, 305 with a sm465 tranny.

I've had an odd squeeling noise while I'm driving. It sounds like rubber against metal. I've narrowed it down to really one thing, the wheel bearings.

what ive done is, tightened both belts, I turn the truck off while it was rolling and it was still doing it. It almost goes away when turning and pressing on the brakes, and the noise is only present when rolling above 15 mph.

I did put it in 4wd, and it was much worse. I spun the passengers side hub and heard a faint knocking noise, drivers was ok.

I have aftermarket warn hubs, my question is, how do I get the outer snap ring out? I can see it, I just can't figure out how to get the dang thing out!

do you guys think I'm looking at the correct problem?

The out snap ring will come out with a pick, or very small flat screw driver. Use two it will go better. Pick it up with one, then work it out with the other. It got louder with it in 4x4 I would take a look at the oil in the transfer case and see if its has a metalic look to it.

I was told that the t-case was rebuilt recently, i will check the fluid though!

Just remember if it was rebuilt recently it was probably junk right before that and rebuilds not done properly don't last very long
Check your front diff too.

Well the PO said it was replaced, it kept on popping out of 4wd.. But he is a moron, he put atf in the tranny, which called for gear oil. It was making the noise before that though..

Alright, I drained the tcase fluid, it looked great. I also jacked up the rear and drove it to about 40 MPH, no noise at all.

Im tearing into the hubs, i got the lock nut that required the 4 prong socket off. Now theres something behind it that i cant figure out hoe to get off.

Use a pick or a magnet and that piece will just slide out, then there will be another one of those nuts behind it.

     That is the keeper washer.  The prong on the inside is seated on the shaft as shown, the holes going around are to lock the preload nut in with, your preload nut will have 1 round spot that sticks out and matches the holes.
     As grim said, it just slides out, grease will cause it to be sticky.

I soon figured that out just after i posted this lol.

I got new rotors as well. is there an easier way to press the wheel studs back in??? I've used my impact gun and a 24inch breaker bar to tighten a nut down on the stud to press it in and it's not getting any closer. The hub still wobbles.

     Find a bench press, it takes 5 min if you can get access to one.

Only thing i got remotely close to that is a bench vise... Hmmm.. Ill give that a shot

There is a tool made for that. It had a bearing in it, and you place it over the stud then run a lug nut down on it with a rugged impact gun.

A C clamp, and a piec of tube will work too. Can't be a cheesy piece of crap C clamp thought. Or a ball joint press.
