67-72 LWB Stepside
« on: November 06, 2011, 10:17:57 pm »
I've been wanting one of the LWB stepside beds, but they're a bit hard to come by. Would the 67-72 work with the dual tanks and everything? From what I can tell, the only difference is the fenders and maybe the steps themselves, and I think I can buy the newer styled ones to throw on. Does this sound right?

In short, can I take a pre-72 LWB stepside and make it look exactly like the 73-87 bed?

I am not 100% positive on this, but I think there is a difference in height between the different body styles, I am sure when others see this they will chime in, and say that is the case or not.

The fender holes aren't in the same place but the actual sides are the same.

So with a little patchwork and some 73-87 fenders (the ones with a filler cap on each side) I could have the same thing? I know it just seems like the older beds are a lot easier to come by.

Bake, thank you for the assistance. I've only posted once or twice, but from reading I can tell you're the type of guy that really helps this forum to fire on all cylinders. And I mean, it's obvious what you've done for us all, Capt.

Whichever route I have to go for the bed, I'll be sure to contribute to the community.

X2 from me. I am pretty sure the box is the same. I know step side tailgates are the same back to the early sixties , maybe even older I can't recall for sure what year. I used a 64 gate on an 87 years back.

So it looks like the newer problem is finding a driver side 73-87 fender with a gas door. Not to mention what I'd pay for stepside fenders, I could probably buy an entire bed, if only I could find one.

There's a guy that's got the 67-72 bed without the fenders, but after all the money and work of buying fenders, patching the old holes, lining up new ones, and fabbing a gas door on the driver side, not to mention all the standard resto work it's gonna need anyway, I might be better off holding out for a factory one to come along.

What about the dually fenders? Are they any different?

Dually fenders are fiberglass and won't work.
